Collaborative Design
The path to outstanding libraries

Peter Gisolfi

Exceptional library design is the result of effective collaboration. A successful design comes about through a productive exchange of ideas among the stakeholders and the architect. These participants define objectives, evaluate alternatives, and make the choices that can lead to a successful library.

The book explains this collaborative process through the experiences of the key people intimately involved in creating ten libraries, five public and five academic. Beginning by explaining how collaboration helps the design process to proceed, the book then presents then library case studies, accompanied by clear analytical drawings and colour photographs of each library. Each case study also include two additional contributions, one written by a librarian and the other written by an administrator or trustee, describing the evolution of the design and the construction, and the value of the new library from the owner’s point of view. The book’s final chapter compares space allocation and functional diagrams for the libraries, and describes the common issues faced and the challenges met.

Readership: This is a must-have text for those involved in designing and developing library and learning spaces, from library and university management to designers and architects. It’s also a useful guide for students taking courses in library and information science to get to grips with the importance of library design.
